I am thankful beyond words for the world of Social Media.  Well, maybe I do have a few words, but you’ve probably figured that out.  Often times, as a kitty dedicated to animal rescue, I run into some who wonders if Social Media can have an actually impact in the rescue world.  I am here to tell you that it can have a very positive impact.

First let me say that I am so very thankful for all of my friends.  With 10,199 folllowers on Twitter, 2,125 Facebook friends, and over 500 followers of our blog, there is indeed power in numbers.  When I post about a critter that needs help there are hundreds and hundreds of you that share that information.  Are we always successful?  No, of course not.  But we’ve been successful enough to make a difference.  When I first started my rescue journey I tried my best to keep track of the number of critters we’ve helped.  But honestly, it was just too much and often difficult to keep track of, so I quit counting when the number topped 200.  Now, instead, I just try to take it one critter at a time.  Thanks to those that describe to my newsletter and follow those stories on my rescue blog ForeverHomeWanted.com. I hand select stories and content dealing with rescue in the hopes that it may just give someone else an idea to help the rescues they are involved with.

Many of you asked about the recent posting I did on the pregnant kitty with limited time since the business that was taking care of her was closing at the end of this week.  As it turns out, she may not be pregnant.  I am not certain of that, but she has been taken to a vet and she didn’t feel any babies.   It may be a case of worms.  She is getting treatment and although the immediacy has passed, she will still need a home.  She is being cared for by the wonderful Vet that took such good care of Sister Dolly before she came to live with us.

I just had to purrticipate in National Straw Hat Day!

My Dad bought us some of those famous Silvervine Pillows from Nip and Bones and we anxiously awaited the opening of the box.  Well, as it turns out, I had to wait my turn since Sister Gracie and Sister Dolly were on the spot and they took both of them.

Sister Dolly actually tossed them all over the place, but mostly she kept tossing it up in the air and catching it again.

Sister Gracie, on the other paw, gave it one great big bunch of bites and then finished it off with a bunny kick and a slobbery bath.

Then, it was finally my turn.  But Sister Zoe though she was going to take it away from me.  I told her I think not!

Hello everyone, I hope you had a terrific weekend, we did.  Mom went shopping and she brought me back this terrific paper bag from Earthfare.  Paper bags are always so much fun.

As much as I really do appreciate this mighty fine bag, I think something in it to play with would have been much better.

Well hello everyone, Brian tells me it is my Saturday. Hey Brian, I thought every day was my day!  Brian is so funny, he thinks he is so much in charge, but that’s okay, sometimes it’s just easier if we let him believe that one.

I’ve got to tell you though, Spring has been very rough for me. Yes, it’s my asthma. Here recently I have had quite a few pretty bad asthma attacks, bad ones, and for several days in a row. Fortunately my Dad has been right there with my rescue inhaler, but a time or two I wasn’t sure that was even going to help.  There has even been some talk about me maybe going back on those evil steroid pills. We’ll have to see though, but that means a vet visit and I’m really not too keen on that idea. I hope the others aren’t too upset with me because with my asthma being so bad the back doors haven’t been open hardly at all.  The bedroom windows get open because I rarely go in there and sit in or by the windows, but the doors overlooking the deck and the backyard, nope, hardly open at all. That does seem to help, but that is my favorite whiffing spot along with Sisters Sascha and Dolly.  But Dad says we can’t risk it right now.

Enough of that asthma stuff, let’s talk about something fun…silvervine pillows. Yes, Dad ordered us some from Nip and Bones, and let me tell you, those are some fun pillows. Dad was a little concerned with me whiffin something strange with my asthma (oops, sorry, there is that bad word again), but they didn’t bother me one bit.  Fun they are, and I think Brian might be posting a few pictures sometime next week.  So I’ve been getting some silvervine exercise rolling around on the floor. Between those silvervine pillows and the Neko Flies playtime has been lots of fun.  That’s about it for me, but before I go I have to say something really important…LOVE YA ALEX!!!

Today is my first Gotcha Day here, isn’t that something?  In certain ways it seems like I just got here, and then in other ways it seems like I’ve been here forever.  It does seem like a long time ago when my original human Mom up and died on me. Then I had to spend several months living in a small cage at a place they called a rescue. Brian tried his best to find me a home and many of you tried to help me too.  But, it seems that nobody really wanted a six year old girl like me.  Well, Brian did and that is when he decided that I should just come here to live.  Oh yes, it has been challenging for me, and for the rest of the family too because in my first six years I had never lived with or shared any kind of space with another kitty.  I’m just glad I landed here, because patience seems to be in abundance around these parts.  I am most certainly thankful for patience.

I love my human Dad and Mom here. They love me too and treat me like I am the most important kitty around. I know there are five others here, but they always make me feel special. I am making progress.  I venture out of my bedroom almost every night. I am learning to see the others from a distance and I am learning that they won’t hurt me. I still like the comfort and security of my bedroom and some nights when Dad opens the door for me I choose to not go out. But the nice thing is that it is always my choice. I must admit I am getting more and more curious about the others and I enjoy sitting upstairs looking down and watching them. Really, that’s progress, because early on I would get all upset and stressed just seeing them. Now, watching them is kind of fun. That probably doesn’t sound like a lot of progress to you, but for me it is a major milestone. I know the others don’t think I like them, but that really isn’t the case, they just scare me because I’m not used to them. The blond one they call Sascha keeps coming up asking me to come out and play. I’m still thinking that one over, but she keeps asking.  She says she is trying to paw it forward.

I know some of you worry about me, Brian tells me. But not to worry. I am delightfully happy, purr often, eat great and have a blast every evening at playtime with my Dad. I have the most purrfect cat tree and wonderful window views of the backyard which is just full of fun critters. So, my first year is behind me and I am looking forward to seeing what this next year brings. My whiskers tell me that there is progress out there just waiting to happen! Smoochies to all of you!!!

I am so thankful for so much in my life, but today I want to tell you I am so very thankful for No Kill Shelters.  I am so fortunate that I ended up in a No Kill place, as did all of my sisters.  Seriously, how can those “other” places call themselves a shelter.  Night after night I see kill lists for the next day and it just breaks my heart.  I am thankful for No Kill and hope to do more to encourage those non-believers as to the merits of a No Kill world.

Just the other day I made a new friend.  Her name is Diana, and among many things, she is the publisher of Critter Magazine of the Upstate of South Carolina. She is doing lots of good things and if you are on Facebook you can stop by and visit Diana on Facebook here. Also, if you are on Facebook, please Like the Critter Magazine of the Upstate. As I was reading the current edition I ran across an interesting note from the No Kill Advocacy Center and their upcoming campaign to make the USA No Kill. The campaign is call Just one Day.

Here is what, in part, are what they are asking:

“We are asking animal shelters across the USA to take a pledge not to kill any savable animals on June 11, 2012. For Just One Day, “Euthanasia Technicians” will put down their syringes and pick up cameras. Instead of injecting animals with lethal doses of sodium pentobarbital, they will photograph them and post them on the Internet, on Facebook, on twitter. On June 11, 2012, they will market their animals to the public, they will reach out to rescue groups, they will host adoption events with discounted rates, they will stay open for extended hours, and they will ask their communities to help them empty the shelter the good way.”

I encourage you to go visit their special website Just One Day, find out more about it, and see what you can do to help. There is tons of useful information there and you can see exactly who is participating from your state. And don’t forget to visit the No Kill Advocacy Center which is full of useful information.

This adorable black-and-white cat has been hanging around a business in Greer, SC. They let her inside sometimes, but unfortunately she got pregnant before anyone could get her spayed. I’m trying to find a caring person in that area to take her before she gives birth. I would hope that whoever takes her would keep the mother and try to get the kittens good homes. Too often the mother cat is discarded in situations like this…the best people are always as concerned about adult strays. This cat is also very friendly and would make a wonderful pet.
